Ravenna, Italy April 10th, 2025 – Oceanit and its partner, Eni S.p.A.—the Italian “supermajor” energy company—are in Ravenna this week co-presenting at the Offshore Mediterranean Conference & Exhibition (OMC Med Energy Conference). Oceanit’s Director of Product, Matthew Sullivan presented insights on the deployment of a new pipeline nanotechnology on an Eni operating asset in the Middle East, aimed at increasing oilfield efficiency and reducing operational costs.
In 2024, Oceanit dispatched a team to an Eni operating asset in the Middle East to implement its DragX nanocomposite technology on a new pipeline located in the Al-Zubair oil and gas field, a site of active hydrocarbon and natural gas exploration. The site experiences aggressive corrosion problems resulting in pipeline failures that can occur in as little as six months from date of installation. Utilizing advanced robotics, artificial intelligence, and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) systems based on Oceanit’s RIVEAL software platform, the team applied the nanocomposite treatment to the inner diameter (ID) surfaces of water injection and oil export pipelines.
DragX is an innovative nanocomposite surface treatment that integrates cutting-edge nanotechnology science with artificial intelligence. The combination of metallurgy and nanoscience enhances asset integrity and ensures optimal flow by creating omniphobic, low-friction surfaces. This synergy yields significant improvements in flow assurance, drag reduction, and corrosion protection. While metallurgical science is an established scientific field, DragX resets the boundaries of how energy operators can approach the cost/benefit analysis of weighing pipeline metallurgical performance with cost, in aggressive operating environments.
“OMC has been a great opportunity for Oceanit and Eni to showcase our deep collaboration with bringing nanocomposite science to the energy industry,” said Matthew Sullivan, Director of Product at Oceanit. “The work we presented is a great example of how Eni is leading the industry by rapidly piloting innovative technologies that provide energy efficiency and asset integrity solutions to their operational assets around the world.”
