Oceanit tracked, monitored, and planned for improvements for a Maui wildlife sanctuary restoration project.
Oceanit, with Wil Chee Planning, produced an Ecosystem Restoration Report/Environmental Assessment (ERR/EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FNSI) for the Kanaha Pond Wildlife Sanctuary.
Challenge: The Kanaha Pond Wildlife Sanctuary (KPWS) is owned by the State Department of Transportation (DOT) and is actively managed by the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Fish and Wildlife (DOFAW). The KPWS currently consists of about 235 acres of permanent wetland. The KPWS is home to two endangered endemic bird species and other endangered bird species have been observed there. The nesting areas for the various endangered bird species within the KPWS have been subject to continual degradation. Oceanit assisted Wil Chee Planning in producing a clear, technically sound, and acceptable Ecosystem Restoration Report/Environmental Assessment (ERR/EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FNSI) for KPWS.
Innovation Delivered: Oceanit accomplished the following tasks:
- Inventoried and characterized existing ecosystem processes and forecasted future ecosystem conditions within a systems context
- Identified restoration opportunities, constraints, and objectives
- Formulated alternative plans
- Evaluated projected benefits and outputs of alternative plans
- Provided details on alternative plans (preliminary engineering)
- Calculated quantity take-offs and unit costs
- Selected a restoration plan
- Assessed impacts of alternative plans
- Prepared a post-construction monitoring plan for the selected alternative to measure the restoration results and outputs of the National Ecosystem Restoration (NER) component.
