Oceanit’s Tiare Martin honored as one of Pacific Business News’ Forty Under 40

Awarded to outstanding young professionals who not only excel in business, but also support the community, Pacific Business News’ Forty Under 40 event recognizes emerging leadership in Hawai‘i. Oceanit is proud to announce that Maui site manager, Tiare Martin, was selected as a member of the Forty Under 40 2016 class for her outstanding achievements. Held at the Hawai‘i Convention Center in early June, the event featured the next generation of Hawai‘i’s leaders.

An alumna of Kamehameha Schools, Tiare graduated as a merit scholar from the University of San Diego with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. After working at Raytheon’s Space and Airborne Systems Center in California, she returned to Hawai‘i in 2005 where she quickly rose to a senior management position at Oceanit. In this role, Tiare drives business development using customer-based problem solving, transdisciplinary thinking, and a culture of innovation.

In the eighth grade, Tiare was introduced to engineering through a career day at school. She was immediately inspired to become an engineer after realizing that engineers use math, science, and creativity to solve everyday problems. Tiare vividly remembers telling her parents that evening that she knew what she was going to be; she was going to be an engineer. She aspired to solve problems in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields for her community.

Tiare continues to inspire other young women today by serving on the Board of Directors for Maui Economic Development Board and participating in their Women in Technology Project. She dedicates her time and mentorship at community events, such as Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, the annual Hawaii STEM Conference, and STEMworks Industry Connection. Through volunteering, she creates an engaging environment of knowledge and support for young women entering the field. Tiare believes diversity drives innovation and encourages them to speak up, as their viewpoints are valuable and needed in the field.

As a leader at Oceanit, Tiare values thoughtfulness and dependability in the way she guides her team in Maui. She believes that listening, learning, and motivating are key characteristics of a leader and uses the corporate Mind to Market methodology to break barriers in research, development, and engineering. This leadership style was inspired by her own parents, who taught her to never back down from a challenge and continually work hard. Under her guidance, her team’s most notable project is a worldwide network of intelligent, autonomous telescopes used to monitor and protect space assets. As she continues to encourage cross collaboration at Oceanit, Tiare is humbled to have received the Forty Under 40 award.
